Our latest staff profile focuses on development operations engineer, Social Club President and charity fundraiser extraordinaire, Kevin Stevens. From keeping colleagues in supply of fish and chips every Friday without fail, to raising awareness of important topics such as mental health and homelessness in his weekly roundup emails, Kevin is a valued member of the team, read on to find out more.
What industries have you previously worked in?
I’ve been lucky enough to have opportunities in a range of industries, from telecommunications and software development, to IT support, database development and e-commerce. Most recently, I made the move over to laser scanning.
GeoSLAM has always been on my radar, being recognised all across the world as front runners in the geospatial sector.
What route did you take to get your job at GeoSLAM?
Leaving school at the age of 16, I completed a telecommunications engineer apprenticeship working for British Telecom. I’d always had a fascination with technology in any form, and from an early age, I had a real love for computers.
My love for tech quickly turned into a hobby, and any of my non-work time I spent at an independent computer retailer, which led to a job helping to run a 1,000-strong user group.
Following a number of career changes, I found I missed the social interaction that comes with working in a larger company. I became aware of a job available at GeoSLAM and took a role in the software development team.

What do you enjoy most about working at GeoSLAM?
Having worked alone for much of my previous careers, I take great pleasure in the fun I have interacting with like-minded colleagues. There’s always been a good balance of humour and professionalism.
Alongside Harriet Brewitt (global marketing and communications executive), I have taken on facilitating the company social club. We’ve already hosted a number of events including visits to mini golf, ice hockey and the board game café, as well as coordinating fundraising events including office bake-offs, barbeques (even when the weather’s not on our side!) and Christmas jumper days. These activities really encourage our staff to get together, have a laugh and build connections beyond the office.

What are your career ambitions?
GeoSLAM is a leading innovator in the 3D scanning market, and has been growing rapidly. Forecasts suggest that the growth is expected to continue, and there will be a need to expand the development team to meet demand. I’m looking forward to being part of that expansion, watching the team go from strength to strength.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy walking our two energetic springer spaniels and watching the Nottingham Panthers play ice hockey – I’m a proud season ticket holder. I also like to wind down by listening to music, whether classical and electronic, or rock, folk and country.
What is your best achievement, personally or professionally, to date?
I have always relished the moment that I received a boxed copy of my first software product, ProSound Designer (sound sampling software), but I think my best professional achievement has been my ability to adapt to market demands.
The realms of this industry never fail to amaze me, and the team at GeoSLAM continue to push boundaries everyday. When I look back, it’s funny to think that my role and the industry I work in would have been considered science fiction when I was at school. Look where we are now!
Personally though, my best achievement has to be my family. I have a wife and two daughters of whom I’m very proud.
