GeoSLAM at South Wolds Careers Fair

Last Updated on 25th April 2022

Software Engineer Abhishek Bhartiya blogs about his experience attending a careers fair at a local school as part of GeoSLAM’s CSR Strategy.

My colleague James and I were asked to participate in a Careers Event at South Wolds Academy in Keyworth to motivate and inspire school children about the work we do and to help them think about choosing the right career.

In my view it is a moral responsibility that people in industry inspire young minds and help them make decisions about their future career. Organisations such as the Army, Royal Air Force, Marks & Spencer’s engineering department, fashion designers, doctors, the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, Loughborough University and Action for Construct participated. I was amazed to see how organisations participate in such events.

We scanned the school with a Datalogger and REVO in hand and yet again the Ghostbusters name came up! It was really encouraging to see that the students were fascinated by our solution, they asked us: “Did you guys build these?!”

We talked about ZEB REVO, 3D data, SLAM, robots, self-driving cars and artificial intelligence and the students were also curious about different programming languages. After the product demonstration, students came back with their teachers to discuss how can they can join GeoSLAM and get involved in some of the innovative work we do here. We told the students about our organisational structure, the different departments and the fact that we regularly recruit apprentices. They also talked to us about our qualifications whilst seriously thinking about their future career options.

In discussions with students and teachers, it became apparent that traditionally careers in engineering and software development appealed more to males. GeoSLAM and other companies, including Marks and Spencer were keen to encourage female involvement with STEM subjects and talk about the world of career opportunities out there for everyone. We told the students that our new CEO Shelley Copsey has just joined us from Australia, following a successful career in research and development.

We were really happy to speak to these young people and at the end of the day, we felt we were able to carry out our responsibility to motivate and offer students opportunities. We look forward to attending more of these events in future!
