Christ the Redeemer, as you’ve never seen it before.

Last Updated on 19th January 2021

Standing proudly atop Corcovado Mountain and overlooking the beautiful city of Rio De Janeiro for almost 90 years – Christ the Redeemer is an iconic manmade structure and one of the new seven wonders of the world. Revealed to the world on October 12th 1931, the statue has become one of Brazil’s largest tourist attractions, and in 2019 it was visited over 2 million times by people from all over the globe.

Ahead of its 90th birthday restoration, GeoSLAM were tasked with creating a digital twin of both the outside and the inside of Christ the Redeemer. Our Latin America channel manager, Gabriel De Barros Praxedes seized this opportunity of a lifetime and began his voyage to the summit of Mount Corcovado, with the GeoSLAM ZEB Horizon.

To complete the scan, the area was closed to the public, allowing GeoSLAM and a small team from CPE Tecnologia, GeoSLAM’s Brazilian dealer, to scan the entire site. With the versatility of the ZEB Horizon and its UAV capabilities, the whole site was scanned – inside and out – within 45 minutes. Emitting 300,000 laser points per second, the narrow staircases and tight internal passages were captured with ease and precision. For the external scan, Gabriel mounted the ZEB Horizon to a UAV and captured the statue in great detail from the air.

Once the scans were complete, Gabriel began to process the data before leaving the site, making sure that the digital model was captured in its entirety. From the marble base to the top of the statue, and everything in between – Gabriel and the team captured the stunning monument in all its glory.

Commenting on the never-before-seen feat, Gabriel, said:

“Given the level of detail on this monument – from the face, hands and robe, to the staircases inside and carved marble base beneath it, I’m in awe of the capabilities of this technology and the clarity of data produced. We’ve been able to capture the statue in a totally new light, that almost no-one has had the privilege to see.”

With our expertise in the Geospatial sector and easy to use scanners, GeoSLAM solutions are being used more and more to aid in the documenting and management of historic or hard-to-reach landmarks.

Thanks to the detailed scans, the restoration work has been well underway in readiness for the statue’s 90th anniversary in October. Restoration workers have been scaling the heights of this gigantic statue to undertake the risky yet rewarding work, taking in the breathtaking views as they go. The statue will be restored to its former glory in time for the 90th anniversary celebrations to begin on October 9th.
